Rugby League players and country sports events

Although many Rugby League players were talented athletes, they were unable to compete in mainstream athletic events because of their status as professional sportsmen. The alternative was to enter the country sports events or the professional sprint competitions, such as those at the Powderhall in Glasgow, which were run for prize money. An acomplished middle distance runner, Roger was a regular at these meetings and remembers many of the players who also competed.
